EMPLOYERS, EMPLOYEES AND COVID-19

If you are an employer, please note that, given the current situation, we will allow delays in sending your March monthly report, levy and RRSP contribution.

With the ongoing crisis regarding the coronavirus, employers, as well as employees in our industry are faced with many uncertainties. What to do when workplaces are closed, what to do when employees are quarantined etc....

Considering the recent measures taken by the government to alleviate the impact of the coronavirus crisis, we suggest that employers, whose employees have stopped working, following a quarantine or a closed workplace, pay them by using their sick leave hours, if applicable, or their accumulated vacation, if the employee is not eligible to the Employment Insurance. We remind you that these measures are to be applied on a voluntary basis: the Parity Committee cannot enforce these measures based on the Decree. Moreover, the employer cannot force the employee to take his vacation if his workplace is closed. 

We would also like to remind employers and employees, that based on article 12 of the Act Respecting Occupational Health and Safety, a worker has a right to refuse to perform particular work if he has reasonable grounds to believe that the performance of that work would expose him to danger to his health, safety or physical well-being, or would expose another person to a similar danger (AROHS/LSST).

In addition, the federal and provincial government recently announced assistance measures to companies and citizens affected by the coronavirus crisis. As the situation is changing rapidly, we recommend that you check the news as well as any news releases from both government levels, federal and provincial, on a regular basis.
